It is a marvellous method that flows in one continuous motion. I am showing you a highly optimized version of the method, to which I was introduced by Derek Smith on the International Guild of Knot Tyers Forum.

This method can be used to make the knot on a table or in the hand. To convince yourself of this, you can attach the two ends of a rope the bars of a chair and practice all three methods in the middle of the rope.

On some pictures, the end of a rope is shown, but the picture could have been taken anywhere on the rope. This means that you do not need to have access to either end of the rope to use these methods. They also allow you to tie a constrictor in the bight. Please note that all three methods not only make constrictors in the hand. Of course, you could also tie a constrictor around your hand by threading the working end as you would around a tree trunk, but this fourth method would not be very useful, nor would it product the knot "in the bight". On this page, I present all three, ranked by personal preference-derived by a personal formula that takes into account speed, flow of motion and esthetics. There are at least three methods for tying a constrictor knot in the hand. And also because it is fast, very very fast. But many times you can tie the knot in your hand and just drop it over the bag, post or other object to be constricted. Sometimes, you just have to tie a constrictor knot the old-fashioned way-looping around a tree, as above.
